Severe Cold Weather Tips
Extreme cold temperatures ahead! The National Weather Service has advised temperatures are expected to drop below -20 degrees in the Greater Bangor Area. Stay indoors if you can, and if you do go outdoors, make sure to dress appropriately!
Protecting Your Home
When temperatures plunge this low, your home needs extra attention. Let faucets drip slightly to prevent pipe freezing. Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around pipes. Make sure your heating system is working properly and have an emergency heat source available if possible.
Vehicle Precautions
Keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent fuel line freeze-up. Check your antifreeze levels and make sure your battery is in good condition. Extreme cold drains batteries quickly. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle with blankets, flashlights, and snacks.
Stay Safe
While we Mainers are used to cold weather, a reminder never hurts when temperatures get this extreme. Limit time outdoors, check on elderly neighbors, bring pets inside, and make sure your insurance coverage is up to date in case the cold causes any damage to your property. Stay safe everyone!
